“Little Eddie” Outduels “The Rooster” for Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial Title at Ponderosa
Junction City, KY-April 3, 2010- Ponderosa Speedway presented the 3rd Annual Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial on Saturday evening and Salt Rock, WV native Eddie Carrier, Jr. would outduel Dustin Linville to claim the win in the 40 lap, $3,000 to win event for the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Models. Other feature event winners for the evening included Bryan Barber of Greensburg, KY in Clayton Homes UMP Modifieds and Josh Sexton of Mallie, KY in D&D Pallet Recyclers UMP Sportsman.
The start of the 3rd Annual Chris Estes/Brad Pena would get hairy at the start as front row starters Dustin Linville and Brad Neat would make contact entering turn three attempting to complete the first lap, with the pair spinning and stacking up six more cars behind them, but everyone would be able to continue. A complete restart would take place and Linville would take the race lead, with Eddie Carrier, Jr., Neat, Justin Rattliff, and Jordan Bland giving chase. Carrier, Jr. would begin to pressure Linville for the lead by lap 7, with Rattliff and Neat would wage their own battle for third at the same time. Neat would take third on lap 10, while Carrier, Jr. and Linville would waltz side-by-side for the lead. Disaster would strike Rattliff on lap 16 as he would loop his mount entering turn three while battling door-to-door with Neat for the third spot. The restart would see Bland get around Neat for the third position, while Carrier, Jr. resumed his spirited battle with Linville for the lead. Lap 26 would see Carrier, Jr. pull alongside Linville again for the lead, with Carrier, Jr. claiming the top spot for good in turn three on lap 27. Lance Matthees would slow in turn two on lap 34 to close the field up once again and the restart would be a no-go when Larry Gray, Jr. and Steve Stollings spun in turn four. The final restart would see Carrier, Jr. begin to pull away from the field, while Bland pressured Linville for second. Skylar Marlar would make his way into the top five past Neat on lap 36 and give chase to older brother Mike Marlar, but no one would catch Carrier, Jr. as he would visit victory lane in the Carl Grover Motorsports owned Engines, Inc./Grover Motorsports/Cox Wrecker Service/Blue Ridge Machinery sponsored #28 Rocket Chassis, Grover Race Engines powered machine. Linville, Bland, Mike Marlar, and Skylar Marlar would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Brad Neat, Eric Wells, Victor Lee, Dustin Neat, and Chris Combs. In preliminary action, Rattliff would be the top qualifier among 23 entries at 14.292 second, while heat race wins fell to Linville, Brad Neat, and Carrier, Jr.
Bryan Barber would take the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 25 lap, $1,000 to win Clayton Homes UMP Modified main event in an event that would be slowed twice by caution flags for a pair of spins by James Gregory. Barber would survive a late race, side-by-side challenge from Hoosier state native John DeMoss and finally prevail at the finish of the race, as Barber would see the checkered flag first aboard his B&B Motorsports/Roby’s Country Gardens/ Scott Clippinger Racing/Cox Wrecker Service/All Star Performance sponsored #10 Bandit Race Cars, Jay Dickens Race Engines powered mount. DeMoss would settle for second, with Joey Kramer scoring a third place finish. Benji Lee would mount a late-race charge to come home fourth, while first-time visitor Doug Adkins would nail down the final spot in the top five. Completing the top ten would be Randy Turpin, Kelly Warren, Don Adams, Jason Wheatley, and Devin Gilpin. In preliminary action, DeMoss would be top qualifier among 16 entries at 15.609 seconds, with heat wins falling to Barber and Kramer.
The D&D Pallet Recyclers UMP Sportsman main event would see Eastern Kentucky native Josh Sexton wheel his unit to the lead at the drop of the green flag and never be headed in the 20, $500 to win special for the division that would go caution free. Sexton would hold almost a full straightaway lead over Rick King in the later stages of the race and visit victory lane for the first time in his career at Ponderosa Speedway in the seat of his Caines Cattle Farm/Ratliff Body Shop/Papaw’s Store/Draughn Racing Supply sponsored #13 Chevy Monte Carlo. King would hold off the advances of Donnie Sullivan to score a runner-up finish, while Eddie Stewart and Willie McIntyr would be the remainder of the top five. The rest of the finishing order would be Gerald Haynes, Jr., Stacy Satterfield, Johnny King, and C.W. Murphy. In preliminary action, Sexton would also be top qualifier among the 13 entries at 16.921 seconds and also win his heat, with Haynes, Jr. winning the other heat.
