Grant and Neat July Double Shot Winners at Ponderosa Speedway
Junction City, KY-July 24, 2009- It was the July Double Shot event on Friday evening at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY and Bartley Grant of Berea, KY would score the $1,500 payday in the Bob Allen Motor Mall Sportsman division and Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY would pick up the $1,500 to win Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model main event. Benji Lee of Loretto, KY would claim the Clayton Homes Modified feature win and Clarence Belcher of Junction City, KY would score the Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature victory.
The Bob Allen Motor Mall Sportsman July Double Shot 40 lap, $1,500 to win event would see Darrell Baker take the lead at the drop of the green flag, followed closely by Bartley Grant, Rick King, Logan Whitis, and Arval Thompson. Pat Hagan would take fifth from Thompson on lap 2 before the caution waved on lap 4 for debris on the race surface in turn one. Back under green, Baker and Grant would settle into what would be an entertaining side-by-side battle for the race lead, with Thompson taking fifth back on lap 5. Josh Sexton would make his way to fifth on lap 7, while the lead trio of Baker, Grant, and King were working slower traffic by lap 11. Lap 17 would see the leaders begin to work a pack of slower traffic, with Baker and Grant still going at it side-by-side for the lead most of the way around the track. But disaster would strike for Baker on lap 21 as he and Grant raced closely in traffic, with the pair making contact, resulting in Baker slowing on the track and drawing the caution with a flat left front tire on lap 22. The top five at this point would be Grant, followed by Whitis, Sexton, Hagan, and Logan Preston. Preston would take fourth from Hagan on lap 24, while Grant began to pull away from Whitis. Gerald Haynes, Jr. would make his first appearance in the top five on lap 30 and move up more position as third place Sexton would pull pitside with mechanical issues as the final caution waved on lap 32 when Donnie Sullivan slowed on the backchute. Grant would lead the rest of the way and claim his sixth win of the season at Ponderosa Speedway in the Mistie and Tori Grant owned Cookie Monster Power Plants/Double J Cylinder Heads/Copper Creek Welding/Xtreme Style Signs and Graphics/Linvilles Finish Carpentry sponsored #1 Buick Regal. Haynes, Jr. would make a last lap pass of Whitis for second, with Whitis claiming third, followed by Preston and Hagan. The remainder of the top ten would be Tom Hall, Justin Trinkle, Darrell Baker, Avral Thompson, and Jimmy Bryan. Grant was top qualifier among 22 entries at 15.900 seconds, with the heats scored by Grant, Baker, and King.
The 25 lap Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model feature would see Dustin Linville take the lead at the start, followed by Brad Neat, Dustin Neat, Victor Lee, and Mike Marlar. Linville and Brad Neat would go at it hard for the race lead before Brad Neat would take lead off of turn two on lap 6. Debris in turn four would slow the action on lap 8 and once action resumed, Dustin Neat would take second from Linville, while Marlar would take fourth from Lee. As Brad and Dustin put some distance on the field, Marlar would continue his charge by taking third from Linville on lap 15. Caution would wave again on lap 17 when Marlars charge would end when he slowed on the frontchute with right-front suspension damage. Linville would spin in turn four on the attempted restart, followed by Bobby Carrier, Jr. drawing the caution for hitting the restart cone. Brad Neat would still be out front, with Jeff Watson now challenging Dustin Neat for second. Joey Tackett would draw the next caution on lap 18 with a spin in turn two and only more lap would be scored before Jimmy Crabtree looped his machine down the backchute. The final restart would see Brad Neat get some heat from now second place Watson, while Dustin Neat, Lee, and Linville would hold down the top five spots. Bobby Carrier, Jr. would make his way back into the top five on lap 20 after getting by Linville, but there would be no catching Brad Neat as he claimed the win in his NWN Distributing/Neats Service Center/T&T Energy/Tarter Gate/Tarter and Roberts Insurance sponsored #41 MasterSbilt Race Car, Cornett Race Engines machine. Watson would take runner-up honors, followed by Dustin Neat, Lee, and Carrier, Jr. Completing the top ten were Linville, Crabtree, Tackett, Dwight Embree, and Ernie Cordier. Johnny Wheeler was top qualifier among 14 entries at 13.440 seconds, with Linville winning the dash, while Marlar won the heat.
The 20 lap Clayton Homes Modified main event would see a rash of cautions with only six of the original ten starters able to take the checkered flag. Defending division track champion Benji Lee would lead all 20 circuits in the main on his way to his first win of the season at Ponderosa Speedway behind the wheel of his Thompson Heat and Air/B&B Motorsports/Smart Shoppers/ Kirker Automotive Finishes/Springfield Auto and Farm Supply/St. Joe Garage sponsored #03 Bandit Race Car, Dale Meers Race Engines powered mount. Dion Benningfield would come in second, with Johnny Lee scoring a third place finish, with fourth and fifth going to Todd Noel and Amos Bunch. Jason Wheatley would be the top qualifier among 10 entries at 15.041 seconds and would also win the heat.
The 20 lap Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature saw the best finish of the night as Kevin Colston led the first 19 laps before he and second place Jeff Johnson made contact exiting turn two on the final lap, slowing both cars a bit, allowing third place Clarence Belcher (who started 9th) to get by both exiting turn four coming to the checkered flag and beating Colston to the line by about three feet to pick up his first win of the season in the Clarence and Candice Belcher owned Belcher Signs and Graphics/Bodies by Linville/Sherwin Williams Paints sponsored #69 C.J.
