Gabbert, Cole, and Duvall Winners in Richmond Raceway Season Opener

RICHMOND, KY (April 17, 2010) – Richmond Raceway would officially begin their 44th Season of Dirt Track Sports Entertainment under the promotion of Joey and Tiffany Tackett on Saturday night. 2010 Season Opener feature event winners would include Russ Gabbert in the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, John Cole in the Sportsman division, and Wayne Duvall in the Road Hog division.
Locals Russ Gabbert and David Adams would bring the field to bring for the 20-lap UMP Open Wheel Modified Feature to the green flag with Brandon Flannery and Michael Ward giving chase. Gabbert would begin to pull away before Chad Barrett would loop his machine on lap five bringing out the caution. On the restart Michael Ward would make the pass on Flannery for third before the caution would wave again for the 57 of Barrett as he would retire his mount for the night at this point. The final restart of the event would see Travis Preston make his way to fourth with a pass on Flannery. Flannery would make his way back to fourth on lap nine with Jim Lemaster taking fifth as Travis Preston fell back to sixth. The top five would remain the same to the final 10 laps as Russ Gabbert would take the win in his Smokehouse Grill, Harold’s Auto Parts, The Cover Shop, Bruce Potter Excavating sponsors #11 Bandit Race Car powered by a Sam Murphy Racing Engine. David Adams would take second in his #18 Lightning Chassis with a Cookie Monster Power Plant followed by Michael Ward, Brandon Flannery, and Jim Lemaster rounding out the top five.
John Cole would take the point in the Sportsman Feature with Logan Preston, Ricky Brandenburg, Glen Hounshell, and Darrell Baker all trailing. Cole would begin to some distance between himself and Preston before the first and only caution would wave for the 71 of Stacy Satterfield on lap seven. On the restart Hounshell and Brandenburg would begin to wage a battle for the third spot with Hounshell taking the position on lap nine. Darrell Bake would take his mount pit side on lap 10; Cole, Preston, Hounshell, Brandenburg, and John Mandigo now your top five. Preston would begin to make up some ground on Cole around the 15th circuit as a battle would begin to heat up. Preston would take several looks to the inside of Cole in turns one and two and again on the outside in three and four. The two would hit lap traffic at lap 17 as Cole continues to fight off a hard charging Preston. Preston would make another attempt at Cole in the remaining laps but could not get it done as John Cole would take the win in his Affordable Towing, D & M Auto Parts, Harold’s Auto Parts sponsored #28 Ford Thunderbird. The “Rocketman” Logan Preston would take second followed by Glen Hounshell, Ricky Brandenburg, and John Mandigo rounding out the top five.
Wayne Duvall would show the way in the 15-lap Road Hog Feature. Duvall would take the lead from the drop of the green with Shawn Grimes right behind. The first caution would wave on lap two for the 19 of Dustin Hall. On the restart Grimes would take a look to the outside of Duvall but could not complete the pass. The field would be slowed again for the 79 of Glen Saylor on lap four and again on lap five for the R13 of Johnny King. The top four would not change for the remaining laps as Wayne Duvall would take the win in his self-sponsored 1988 Oldsmobile followed by Shawn Grimes in second, veteran Allen Hackworth Sr. would take third with Johnny King and Terry Hall rounding out the top five.
