Barber Bags Caution-Filled Battle of the Bluegrass Modified Series Wins at 201 Speedway
Sitka, KY-August 8, 2009- The Battle of the Bluegrass Modified Series presented by Graphic Impressions returned to action after a week off with a visit to 201 Speedway in Sitka, KY and Bryan Barber of Greensburg, KY would lead about the last 300 feet of the race to capture his second straight series victory.
The win by Barber was his third career series win and third win of the ’09 campaign and also vaulted the third generation racer into the series points lead. Barber’s victory would come in the seat of his Roby’s Country Gardens/B&B Motorsports/All Star Performance/ Frankland Racing Equipment sponsored #10 Bandit Race Cars, Jay Dickens Race Engines powered machine.
Runner-up honors would go to Joey Kramer of Hanover, IN in the Claudette Kramer owned Brian Shewmaker’s State Farm Insurance/Dart Machinery sponsored Lightning, Bullock by Kramer powered mount, with J.T. Ayers of New Haven, KY grabbing third place honors in the Don and Ginger Ayers owned Alpha Salon/After Hours Body Shop sponsored Bandit, Dale Meers entry. Scooter Lemaster of Inez, KY would take fourth in the final rundown in the Lemaster Motorsports owned Alchemy Engineering/Team Extreme sponsored Harris, S&G powered unit, while Jason Hall of Hindman, KY would complete the top five in his Tim Short Automotive/PineTop Motors sponsored Lightning, Smith Race Engines entry.
Only nine of the original 23 starters would finish the event, with the remainder of the finishing order in the 201 Speedway event being Mike Howard, Don Adams, William Hensley, and Keith Tincher. The 30 lap event would be slowed by a series record fifteen caution flags.
The initial start would be brought back when Jeremy Hayes would spin in turn one. Once underway, Don Adams, Jason Hall, and Joey Kramer would three-wide for the lead into turns one and two, with Adams coming away with the advantage, followed by Kramer Hall, Bryan Barber, and Randy Turpin. Barber would take third on lap 2, with Turpin to fourth, and Courtney Conley into fifth after Hall slipped in turn two. Adams and Kramer would pull away a bit from Barber at this point in the race as caution would slow the action when Jimmy Arnett would spin exiting turn four on lap 7. The restart would see the front four remain the same, only to have J.T. Ayers make his way past Conley into fifth. Jim Barnett would draw the next caution on lap 9 with a turn two spin. This restart would see Ayers pass Turpin for fourth as only one more lap would be scored until sixth place Conley would spin his machine in turn two on lap 10.
Ayers would to third past Barber on the restart, while Kramer pressured Adams for the lead. Barnett would draw his second caution of the race with a turn two spin on lap 11. Only one more lap would be scored when Leslie Johnson would spin in turn four on lap 12, with two attempted lap 12 restarts also voided by cautions as well, with one being a three car tangle in turn four between William Hensley, Earl Lawson, and Keith Tincher, while the other caution waved for sixth place runner Kelly Warren, who saw the right-front suspension break on his machine coming back to restart. One more lap would be completed before Joel Jenson spun his piece in turn four. Action would resume with Adams still on the point, with Kramer second, while Ayers and Barber would trade third and fourth, with Barber winning the battle at the halfway signal on lap 15. Pete Castle would make his way to fifth on the same circuit, only to roll to a stop on the track one trip later on lap 16. The restart would see one more round completed when fourth place J.T. Ayers would spin in turn two. This restart would see Adams still on the point, with Barber taking second from Kramer and Scooter Lemaster and Corey McKenzie now fourth and fifth, only to have action slowed again for a spin by Earl Lawson on lap 19.
This restart would see Adams still in the lead, with Barber and Kramer trading slidejobs for second, with Kramer winning the battle of sliders as the caution waved again on lap 23 for a turn four spin by Joel Jenson. The restart would see the front five be Adams, Kramer, Barber, Lemaster, and Turpin, with Kramer dogging Adams for the lead, with Barber right on the bumper of Kramer. Pete Castle would slow on the backchute with suspension damage to trigger the 14th caution of the race on lap 26 and only more circuit would be completed when fifth place running Randy Turpin parked his mount at the topside of turn four with a flat right front and suspension damage for the final caution of the race. Business would pick up at this point as the front trio of Adams, Kramer, and Barber raced hard for the win. As the field received the two lap to go signal, Adams would slow down the backchute with what would be a flat right front tire but continued on, handing the lead to Kramer as the field received the white flag. But Kramer would jump the cushion in turn three coming to the checkered flag, allowing Barber to motor beneath Kramer and take the lead exiting turn four and grab the victory over Kramer, Ayers, Lemaster, and Jason Hall.
In preliminary action, Randy Turpin was Racing Optics top qualifier among 23 entries with a lap time of 15.130 seconds. REAL Racing Wheels qualifying heat events would be captured by Adams, Hall, and Kramer.
The next event for the Battle of the Bluegrass Modified Series will take place on Friday August 21 at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY. The event will be a $2,000 to win points contest.
