The win by Barber was his second career series win and second win of the ’09 campaign. Barber’s victory would come in the seat of his Roby’s Country Gardens/B&B Motorsports/ All Star Performance/Frankland Racing Equipment sponsored #10 Bandit Race Cars, Jay Dickens Race Engines powered machine.
Michael England of Glasgow, KY would claim runner-up honors in the event in the WompusCat Enterprises owned, Kelvin Wilson Dozing/Davis Machine Shop sponsored Lightning, Pro Power machine, with Joey Kramer of Hanover, IN picking up a third place finish in the Claudette Kramer owned, Brian Shewmaker’s State Farm Insurance/Larry’s Truck Service sponsored Lightning, Bullock by Kramer mount. Benji Lee of Loretto, KY would ride home to a fourth place finish in his Thompson Heat and Air/Smart Shoppers sponsored Bandit Race Car, Dale Meers powered unit, while Dennis Roberson of Lexington, KY would round out the top five in the Mark Trimble and Peydon Pelphrey owned, Mortgage Suppliers/Tim Short Automotive sponsored Lightning, GCP entry.
The remainder of the top ten finishers in the 9th Annual Bluegrass Rumble were 12th starting Russ Gabbert, 16th starting Jason Wheatley, B.J. McCammon, Justin Houston, and Jason Hall. The 30 lap event would be slowed by three caution flags.
After two starts called back by caution flags, one for Don Adams making contact with the turn two wall and for a spin by Kelly Warren, action would get going with Michael England taking the lead in a three-wide battle off of turn two, followed by Bryan Barber, Benji Lee, B.J. McCammon, and Joey Kramer. Kramer would win a three-wide battle on lap 2 to take the third position before action would be slowed again for the final time for Adam Cole, who rolled his mount to a stop on the frontchute on lap 4. The restart would see England stay on the point, holding a slight advantage over Barber, while Kramer would stave off challenges from Lee as the front five remained the same through lap 10.
By this point, England and Barber were putting some distance on third place Kramer and looked to have intentions on settling the issue among themselves. Meanwhile, Russ Gabbert was charging his way to the front and would take the fifth slot from McCammon on lap 14. The lead duo of England and Barber would begin to work traffic as the halfway signal was displayed. Barber would turn the heat up on England as the pair battled in traffic. Barber would slidejob past England to momentarily take the race lead, but England would battle right back to nip Barber at the line on lap 19, before Barber would return the slider and take the lead for good on lap 20.
With Barber putting some distance between himself and England by lap 23 and working heavy traffic, Dennis Roberson would drive his machine into fifth on the high-side by moving past Gabbert. The front five would remain the same of the final few circuits, with Barber extending his lead even more before the drop of the checkered flag, followed by England, Kramer, Lee, and Roberson.
In preliminary action, Michael England was Racing Optics top qualifier among 29 entries with a lap time of 17.066 seconds. REAL Racing Wheels qualifying heat events would be garnered by England, Kramer, and Barber.
